Because of the shorter lifespan of our pets, we stress the importance of the physical examination. Thorough check-ups and preventive care can help alleviate serious health problems. Depending on your cat's age and health status, the doctor will recommend annual or more frequent examinations.
We offer a wide range of veterinary services to keep your companions feeling their best:
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services: Our hospital is equipped to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to care for your cat's complete health care needs. Our in-house laboratory equipment is capable of performing blood analysis such as complete blood count (CBC) and chemistry analysis for surgical patients or critically ill patients. When immediate results are not essential, we send a majority of our blood samples to an outside professional laboratory. Our facility is equipped to hospitalize surgical or debilitated patients that require IV fluid therapy, feeding tubes, multiple injectable medications, or urinary catheters.
Laboratory: Our in-house laboratory facilities provide for rapid chemistry, hematology and urinalysis testing. We also utilize Idexx Diagnostics (a commercial laboratory) for fecal specimens, "General Health Profiles" which are the most common blood panel we use, as well as thyroid, diabetic and renal profiles, histopathology (analysis of tissue biopsy specimens) and other specialty tests.
Surgical Services: Our state-of-the-art surgical suite provides for the performance of a wide variety of surgical procedures including spay and neuter, orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries. Occasionally, a specialist surgeon will be brought in to perform more advanced procedures.
Anesthesia: We utilize the safest available anesthetics to provide an extra margin of safety, especially for our older or high-risk patients. Using the most modern equipment including ECG, pulse oximetry and blood pressure, the patient's vital signs are monitored during all anesthetic procedures.
Specialty Consults: We utilize the services of outside specialists as a way to augment your cat's health care. Specialist disciplines include internal medicine, oncology, radiology, dentistry and surgery. These specialists may perform ultrasounds, endoscopic procedures, or provide consultations on specific cases. This helps us with the diagnosis of more complicated cases and expands the services that our clients can access.
Radiology Services: Our on-site, modern X-ray equipment provides high quality radiographs to aid in the quick diagnosis of many disorders. We also have a new high resolution ultrasound machine. Our veterinarians regular consult with and utilize the services of Veterinary Imaging Center of San Diego, a veterinary radiology specialty practice nearby.
Dentistry: Our dental services include ultrasonic teeth cleaning and high speed polishing, root planing, surgical tooth extractions, digital dental radiography, and oral surgery. Any dentistry procedure, even simple cleaning, must be performed under general anesthesia in order to safely and properly scale under the gum line and polish the teeth. We have digital dental imaging equipment which further allows us to determine if there are any problems with your cat's teeth. X-rays help our doctors to diagnose cavities, tooth root abscesses, retained roots, etc. The image below is of a cat's mandible (the lower jaw.) The middle tooth is a premolar tooth with a feline odontoclastic resorptive lesion (FORL or cavity) and loss of jaw bone.
